Motorcycles & Scooters You Can Ride On A CBT From Age 16

If you’re 16 and looking for a motorcycle, scooter or moped you can ride on the road, this page shows our current selection of suitable machines. At age 16, riders can ride a qualifying moped after completing the required Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and holding the correct licence entitlement.

Although many people use the words motorcycle and scooter to describe the different styles available, machines that meet the legal requirements for riding at 16 are classed as mopeds. They can have traditional scooter styling, retro styling or even look more like a motorcycle.

What Can You Ride at 16 in the UK?

From age 16, you can ride a moped that meets the relevant licence requirements. For most modern mopeds this means a machine with a maximum design speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) and, for petrol-powered machines, an engine capacity of no more than 50cc.

You will normally need a provisional driving licence and must complete a CBT before riding on the road. Learner riders must also display the appropriate L plates (or L/D plates in Wales).

You cannot move up to a 125cc motorcycle or scooter simply by completing CBT at age 16. The minimum age for riding a motorcycle up to 125cc under the relevant learner entitlement is 17.

50cc Motorcycles and Scooters for 16 Year Olds

Being limited to the moped category does not mean every bike looks the same. There are several different styles available for 16-year-old riders.

You may prefer a modern automatic 50cc scooter with simple twist-and-go controls, a retro-styled moped, or a machine with more traditional motorcycle styling.

The products shown on this page are selected because they are suitable for the type of licence entitlement available from age 16. Click on any model to see its current price, specification, colours, availability and further information.

Do I Need CBT to Ride at 16?

Most 16-year-old riders will need to complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before riding a moped on public roads.

CBT provides basic practical and road-riding training and is designed to make sure you can ride safely before going out on the road independently.

Choosing Your First 50cc Bike at 16

Your first bike needs to suit more than just your licence. Things worth considering include seat height, overall weight, riding position, storage, automatic or geared controls, styling and how you intend to use the bike.

For commuting to work or college, an automatic scooter can be particularly convenient. Other riders may prefer the appearance and riding position of a motorcycle-style 50cc machine.

Our team can help you compare the different options and find a machine that feels comfortable and practical for you.
