The rules for riding a moped depend on your age, the type of driving licence you hold and, for car licence holders, when you passed your driving test.

Can I Ride a Moped on a Car Licence?

If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001, you can generally ride a moped up to 50cc without completing CBT, without displaying L plates and without taking a separate moped test.

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001, different rules apply. You will normally need to complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before your full moped entitlement becomes valid.

Because licence entitlements can vary, we always recommend checking the categories shown on your driving licence before riding.

What Counts as a Moped?

For modern licence rules, a moped is generally a two-wheeled vehicle with a maximum design speed of 45 km/h (28 mph). For petrol-powered mopeds, the engine capacity must not exceed 50cc.

Mopeds are available in many different styles. Some look like traditional automatic scooters, while others have retro or motorcycle-inspired styling.

Can You Ride a Moped From Age 16?

Yes. The minimum age for riding a qualifying moped on the road is 16.

Most 16-year-old learner riders will need a provisional driving licence and must complete CBT before riding on public roads. Learner riders must also display the appropriate L plates.
